• Prep the Room: The first thing you need to do when removing carpet is make sure the room has been completely cleared out. You will need to remove any doors leading into or out of the room as well as closet doors, if they are getting in the way of carpet removal.
• Pull Carpet from Tack Strips: When carpet is installed, it is attached to your floor with tack strips. Tack strips are long strips of plywood that have a bunch of small nails, or tacks, sticking out of them. This holds the carpet in place once it is installed. It works best to start in a corner with some pliers as you grab the carpet to pull away from the tack strips.
• Cut Carpet: Removing large swaths of carpet in one piece can be difficult. It is much easier if you cut the carpet into more manageable pieces. This is done easiest with a sharp utility knife to help you get it done. By cutting it, you can more easily carry it out of the house.
Remove the Pad: The next step will be to remove the carpet pad from the room. Carpet pads are held down by a bunch of carpet staples. When you use pliers, the carpet pad should pull up fairly easily. Cutting the carpet pad into smaller pieces may make it easier to remove from your home as well.
• Scrape the Floor: Finally, you will need to remove the thousands of carpet staples that you have in the subfloor from removing the carpet pad. A floor scraper can make quick work of carpet staples. You may have a couple that won’t scrape out, but you can pull them out with pliers.
